Book Summary:

The only book in English for readers of all ages by Nobel Prize-winning novelist Olga Tokarczuk is a beautifully illustrated meditation on the fullness of life. "Olga Tokarczuk’s The Lost Soul, an experimental fable illustrated by Joanna Concejo and translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones, resonates with our current moment. . . . What a striking, and lovely, material object it is." —New York Times "The Lost Soul, by Olga Tokarczuk and illustrator Joanna Concejo, is a quiet meditation on happiness, following a busy man who loses his soul. . . It pours a childlike sense of wonder into a once-upon-a-time tale that is already resonating with adults around the world." —Guardian The Lost Soul is a deeply moving reflection on our capacity to live in peace with ourselves, to remain patient, attentive to the world. It is a story that beautifully weaves together the voice of the Nobel Prize-winning Polish novelist Olga Tokarczuk and the finely detailed pen-and-ink drawings of illustrator Joanna Concejo, who together create a parallel narrative universe full of secrets, evocative of another time. Here a man has forgotten what makes his heart feel full. He moves to a house away from all that is familiar to him to wait for his soul to return. "Once upon a time there was a man who worked very hard and very quickly, and who had left his soul far behind him long ago. In fact his life was all right without his soul—he slept, ate, worked, drove a car and even played tennis. But sometimes he felt as if the world around him were flat, as if he were moving across a smooth page in a math book that was covered in evenly spaced squares... " —from The Lost Soul The Lost Soul is a sublime album, a rare delicacy that will delight readers young and old. "You must find a place of your own, sit there quietly and wait for your soul." Winner of the Bologna Ragazzi Award, Special Mention 2018, Prix de l'Union Internationale pour les Livres de Jeunesse (IBBY), The White Raven (IJB Munich), and the Łódź Design Festival Award.

Book Summary:

For thirty-four years, I lived my life placing God in the category as the tooth fairy, Santa Claus, and the Easter bunny. I attended a church for weddings and funerals. I hated both. Something about the chapels always made me anxious and nervous. Maybe it was because of the way I felt about a God I didn't believe in. At thirty-four years old, I was set in my ways when it came to any type of religion. I was happy with my life. I had a wonderful husband, a company that was thriving, a home I loved, a nice car, and we took vacations often. I didn't want for anything. I also worked for everything. It was not handed to me on a silver platter. I grew up in poverty, a broken home, along with bouncing from one place to another through my teens. I was determined to be successful, and by my standards, I had made it. The only thing that I failed at was the religion topic. My husband would always try to get me to go to church or change my view. For almost a decade, he tried, but it fell on deaf ears. We would disagree about it, and I refused to participate in anything religious. I thought I was doing a great job and had my life together. That could be far from the truth. I couldn't see it. It was not until God himself visited me in my living room (He knew he would not find me sitting in a church pew or even near one). That's the day I found out I had it all wrong, also the day that my husband's prayers were answered. However, he never expected my reaction or how it would ultimately affect him as well and change his life. God wanted me to give up everything I worked so hard for. However, my husband didn't sign up for that. So he too was faced with very hard decisions. Are you wondering what God told me? Well, he told me to find a lady named Hellen in another country (Nicaragua, to be exact). Let's just say my life changed that instant. First of all, I had to tell my husband I am changing the way I live and placed my most prized assets on the back burner-my marriage, my career, everything I struggled and worked so hard for. All my time, energy, resources are now going to be devoted to God. You know, the one I knew nothing about.

Book Summary:

For the past 16 years, Cadillac Man (so named because he was once hit by an El Dorado and thereafter bore an imprint of its hood ornament) has lived on the streets of New York City. Over those years, he has recorded the facts of his daily life - the harsh realities of surviving on the street, the often tragic encounters with the non-homeless world, the deep bonds with his fellow homeless, and the surprisingly varied realities of life on the outside - writing hundreds of thousands of words in a series of spiral bound notebooks. "My Life in the Streets" distills those journals into a memoir of homeless life that is peopled with indelible characters and packed with gripping stories. In a gritty, poignant, and funny voice, Cadillac narrates his descent into homelessness, the travails and unexpected freedoms of his life, and the story of his love affair with a young runaway, whom he eventually (and tragically) reunites with her family. The United States has 700,000 homeless people; ultimately, Cadillac's story is their story.

Book Summary:

For readers of Nova Ren Suma, Maggie Steifvater, and Maureen Johnson comes a spellbinding tale about choosing your own path, the families we create for ourselves, and facing the ghosts of your past. In the town of St. Hilaire, most make their living by talking to the dead. In the summer, the town gates open to tourists seeking answers while all activity is controlled by The Guild, a sinister ruling body that sees everything. Dec Hampton has lived there his entire life, but ever since his parents died, he's been done with it. He knows he has to leave before anyone has a chance to stop him. His best friend Russ won't be surprised when Dec leaves—but he will be heartbroken. Russ is a good medium, maybe even a great one. He's made sacrifices for his gift and will do whatever he can to gain entry to The Guild, even embracing dark forces and contacting the most elusive ghost in town. But when the train of Annie Krylova, the piano prodigy whose music has been Dec's main source of solace, breaks down outside of town, it sets off an unexpected chain of events. And in St. Hilaire, there are no such things as coincidences.

Book Summary:

Hockey is the lens through which we see our lives—how we measure right and wrong, how we understand our hopes and fears. So it was for Dave Bidini in 1974, the last year Dave Keon played in Toronto. In a new grade in a new school, Bidini found himself the victim of a bully—a depredation he could understand only by thinking about what the Leafs dauntless captain went through game after game. Throughout his twenty-two-year career, Keon was only in one hockey fight, in his last game as a Leaf on April 22, 1974. It was on this day that the eleven-year-old Bidini decided to fight back, an occasion that the writer looks back on with breathtaking courage and honesty. But while Bidini would remain a blue-blooded Leafs fan into adulthood, Keon became estranged from the franchise with which he’d won four Stanley Cups, two Lady Byngs, and the first ever Conn Smythe Trophy in 1967.

Book Summary:

In Depth Sport Psychology: Reclaiming the Lost Soul of the Athlete is a unique exploration of the vital archetypal elements and themes that emerge when considering elite sportssport psychology through a depth psychological lens. It provides athletes, young people, coaches and clinicians with ways to harness the self, placing athletes on a path towards personal growth and sporting excellence by reconnecting their spirit to their sport. Burston’s multidisciplinary and inclusive approach details the importance of spirituality and other unmeasurable factors, such as emotional recovery, when investigating sporting potential. Incorporating research from classic mythology and the Greek sports academies, he traces sport back to humanity’s animalistic and traumatic origins, explores the rise of the Olympic movement, and compares archetypal identities that are shared with athletes today. Relating this to today’s financially driven and technological sporting climate, he considers the roots of play, examines the difference in the psyche of team sports and individual players, discusses the crucial, clinical welfare of young people, and dedicates a section to sportswomen. In Depth Sport Psychology emphasises how awakening an athlete’s unconscious spirit can positively improve their performance, and offers an applicable methodology for athletes and teachers to use to better understand themselves and achieve brilliance. Uniquely exploring the connection between Jungian depth psychology and sports, the accessible tone of In Depth Sport Psychology will be key reading for analytical and depth psychologists in practice and in training, sports psychologists and other professionals working with athletes. It will also appeal to athletes and sportspeople interested in exploring a new perspective on sporting excellence.

A Few Sighs from Hell

  • Pages : 104
  • Category : Religion
  • Reads : 185

Book Summary:

In this exposition of the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, Bunyan warns his readers of the horror of remaining under God's wrath, and sweetly opens up the only way of escape: faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. "Friend," Bunyan urges, "because it is a dangerous thing to be walking towards the place of darkness and anguish; and again, because it is the journey that most of the poor souls in the world are taking, and that with delight and gladness, as if there was the only happiness to be found — I have therefore thought it my duty, being made sensible of the danger that will befall those who walk therein — for the preventing of you, O you poor man or woman! to tell you, by opening this parable, what sad success those souls have had, and are also likely to have, who have been, or shall be found persevering therein. O sinner, sinner, there are better things than Hell to be had, and at a cheaper rate by the thousandth part! O! there is no comparison! There is Heaven, there is God, there is Christ, there is communion with an innumerable company of saints and angels. Hear the message then that God sends, that Christ sends, that saints bring, nay, that the dead send unto you: 'I beg you, therefore, that you would send him to my father's house! If one went unto them from the dead — they would repent!'"

Book Summary:

In The Lost Soul of American Protestantism, D. G. Hart examines the historical origins of the idea that faith must be socially useful in order to be valuable. Through specific episodes in Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Reformed history, Hart presents a neglected form of Protestantism—confessionalism—as an alternative to prevailing religious theory. He explains that, unlike evangelical and mainline Protestants who emphasize faith's role in solving social and personal problems, confessional Protestants locate Christianity's significance in the creeds, ministry, and rituals of the church. Although critics have accused confessionalism of encouraging social apathy, Hart deftly argues that this form of Protestantism has much to contribute to current discussions on the role of religion in American public life, since confessionalism refuses to confuse the well-being of the nation with that of the church. The history of confessional Protestantism suggests that contrary to the legacy of revivalism, faith may be most vital and influential when less directly relevant to everyday problems, whether personal or social. Clear and engaging, D. G. Hart's groundbreaking study is essential reading for everyone exploring the intersection of religion and daily life.

Book Summary:

Wild Fire is the second book from The Lost Soul series. Right off the heels of the first book, The Butch-a-Cans Are Touching Down on American Soil, and bouncing back and forth from one country to another. Diving back into a world that seems so foreign. It's not the two different countries that make them feel uncomfortable. It's the life-changing love from Christ. Jim always believed in God. However, this is a new realm for his wife, Rhonda. Wild Fire exposes and shows the vulnerabilities and concerns from a new believer's perspective. They travel back into the depths of the Nicaraguan landfill, all while bringing along the once elusive "t-shirt people." God's clearly protecting this couple as they continue to find themselves in the middle of chaos and danger, only to fully believe without a doubt, who is leading the way. Some would say they need protection, guidance, and this is likely so when Rhonda finds herself on the side of an empty Nicaraguan dirt road, in the middle of the night, with the Nicaraguan police threatening to take her translator to jail. It's as if this couple continues to walk straight into a lion's den, only to find a layer of protection shielding them. What many people would consider a coincidence or lucky break, the Buchanans know it's the love of Christ. They continue to rely on their faith and know it's God who has placed an armor of protection around them. If you are not sure about "church people" or "believers," you will be captivated by the transformation, as no questions seem to be off-limits with these two. You have probably had the exact same thoughts, questions, and you will find you are not alone. Rhonda has always been a thrill-seeker, looking for adventure at all times. Always looking for that next adrenaline rush. However, this is a rush she did not go looking for, and for once she becomes timid by the "church people," wondering how this all happened, yet not giving up. This journey will pull at your heartstrings, make you laugh, yet at the same time feel the seriousness of it all. If you have a long-standing relationship with Christ, be prepared to catch yourself wanting to reach out and (kindly) shake them to say, "No, it's not that way. You're only making it harder on yourself." Be prepared to be captivated as they travel into this new world-a world that has changed who they are for life. No going back, yet no idea what will happen as they travel on with nothing but faith.

Book Summary:

This book is all about the feelings and thoughts of few good and new writers. Everyone has some creativity, any talent or any passion and writing is also one of this. Many people feel shy to share their problems, their happiness, joy and sorrow with others or sometimes the situation is like they are depressed but cant tell anyone, but writing is such a thing through which they show their feelings and speak up without any fear or shyness. “The Lost Soul” is the one of the beautiful book compiled by “Aakash Rathod” in which few writers expressed their feelings, thoughts and stories with the help of their pens.

Book Summary:

Squall and I have made it to Seaside. I can see the Great Sea. None of the ships we find are sturdy enough to make the journey to the North, but I get a tip from a peculiar stranger about a ship that crosses the Great Sea regularly. The captain of that ship, Luthen, turns out to be an old friend of Squall’s. I want to trust him because Squall does, but my “gift” tells me otherwise. And for good reason. Luthen has a grudge against Squall. He takes us prisoner and maroons us on a Drooma-infested island. Unless we can survive long enough to find a way to escape, this will be the end of my journey. The Soul Seer Saga is a sci-fi/fantasy adventure with an overarching dystopian story. The books must be read in order.

Book Summary:

No one will listen. No one will help. To survive, you must save yourself... The haunting saga of a little girl betrayed, and the strength and hope she needs to find a happy ending, from the hugely popular author of No One's Girl, Rosie Goodwin. Perfect for fans of Lindsey Hutchinson and Shelia Newberry. 'Powerful and harrowing' - Peterborough Evening Telegraph When a mysterious fire kills her adoptive parents, Madeleine's worst fear comes true - she and her beloved brother Oliver are separated. Worse still, Maddie is blamed for starting the fire and, labelled a difficult child, she is sent to a children's home. Far from idyllic, and buried deep in the countryside, the home well conceals the misery of its young occupants. Subjected to a harsh regime of abuse and degradation, Maddie makes a brave attempt to escape. But her brief weeks of freedom are thwarted when she is caught and taken back to River House. Maddie clings to her determination to one day be reunited with Oli, and it is this which gives her the strength to endure what lies ahead. For she knows she can rely only on herself - there is no one else to keep her safe... What Amazon readers are saying about The Lost Soul: 'I loved this book. I read it in three days, it made me cry and smile. It is a little dark in places but at the same time it is pure genius. Hats off to Rosie Goodwin. Curl up with this book and a chocolate bar and you would be in pure heaven. It is a long time since I read a book as good as this. I can't wait to read her next novel. She has become one of my favourite authors' 'Rosie has yet again created another excellent story, a page turner and I have to say I think it is her best book yet. The story flows effortlessly and there's plenty of twists and turns at the most unexpected places, none of which are obvious. Each character is well developed and you get a real feel for them all'
